About Me

The rest of this website is about research and work, but that’s not all I spend my time on. Here’s a sampling of the rest:

Things I make

Food

A few favorite cookbooks, for when I’m not improvising: Marcella Hazan’s Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking, The Fannie Farmer Cookbook, and (when I’m in the mood for something delicious but time-consuming) Neelam Batra’s 1000 Indian Recipes.

Quilting and Embroidery

I finished my first full-scale quilt in 2016 (it’s made out of old pants), and I’ve made a number of smaller-scale projects over the years. The red pillow is one I made for my grandmother out of old fabrics she had.

Things I do

Hiking and Birding

One of the best things about being in State College, PA was the proximity of great hiking and bird habitat. Northern VA has its share of good spots, too: Burke Lake Park and the Mason Neck/Occoquan area are new favorite birding locations. Check out eBird if you like birding and citizen science.
